During the evening of February 12th 2022, Lancaster City police officers were dispatched to the 200 block of N Arch Street to assist a man who was under the influence of controlled substances.
When he arrived, Officer John DeJesus was able to provide Spanish-English translation between the man and the two emergency medical technicians (EMTs) within the back of the ambulance. Noticing that the man was becoming increasingly paranoid and anxious, Officer DeJesus spoke calmly and tried to divert his attention away from the EMTs so that he could receive appropriate care.
Despite Officer DeJesus’ efforts the man became increasingly agitated and began to fight emergency responders. Officer DeJesus immediately reacted and tried to gain control of the man along with the EMTs. Officer DeJesus received numerous kicks from the man as he flailed about the inside of the ambulance. During the foray, the man was able to pull a knife which he had concealed on him. He immediately began to slash at those surrounding him, cutting one of the EMTs on their side.
Officer DeJesus acted quickly and and was able to gain control of the man’s arm. The man continued to fight and refused to let go of the knife but Officer DeJesus’ determination to disarm the man was overwhelming. The knife was able to be successfully taken away and the man was able to secured, without the need for additional force.
Officer DeJesus placed himself in immediate danger in order to protect those around him and it was because of his selfless acts that only minor injuries were sustained. He acted quickly and with valor and saved each person from a deadly situation. Thank you Officer DeJesus for your bravery and service!
